It is written in a biographical style rather than as historical fiction despite the occasional sprinkling of dialogue and liberal discussion of the characters' thoughts. That is not to say that the book is uninteresting; I did enjoy the historical details. Nonetheless, I did not feel emotionally engaged with the characters which is the standard by which I tend to judge any work of fiction - historical or othe The author has clearly done her homework, but the result fell short of my expectations.

Nonetheless, I did not feel emotionally engaged with the characters which is the standard by which I tend to judge any work of fiction - historical or otherwise. Apr 07, Sadie rated it liked it. This is a through biography of an amazing woman. I really enjoyed learning about her early years, how she endured a terrible life and marriage, and her successful coup to become Empress. The book is quite lengthy and detailed and the second half did not interest me as much. I decided not to complete the second half. Aug 11, Michele rated it it was ok.

From all the other reviews you have the story line but it is a must to read even though it is long if you enjoy history, I enjoyed the the description of the cloths and places Catherine visited. We really know so little about Russia and her leaders of the past and it made me appreciate what leaders of the foreign counties had to go through to govern. For a woman at that time to lead must have been a big problem If you like to read about other counties history I feel this is a must read.

It is history made easy to understand and read.

The research that went into the book must have been awesome!! Thanks for all the work you did Sigrid Weidenweber!! I for one appreciate it. One person found this helpful 2 people found this helpful. I enjoy reading historical novels because I learn a lot about life during those times, if the people writing the novel do a good job researching the background historical information. At times it got somewhat tedious but historically speaking it was a bit of an eye-opener.

I learned things about the old Russian culture and history that really surprised me. The author has taken a fascinating subject and made it reasonably dull. I did not find a translator's name on the book, but I have a hard time believing the author is a native speaker of English: No domestic violence occurs, although you can't talk about 18th century Russia without talking about violencebattles, assassinations, Cossack attacks.

Sexual content is actually minimal, described accurately but without porn-like detail, so I have no problem with that. The narrative perspective is "third person omniscient," which is perfectly legitimate, but the account of Catherine's last thoughts when she was comatose and unable to speak seemed a bit much. An extremely well written book.

I purchased this book based on other people"s recommendations amongst which I remember that the author had done an awful lot of research. The amazing thing about her writing is that you feel it is all happening right now somehow. I admit that I have always somewhat been attracted to Russian literature, music, ballet and the language itself and normally I am not too much of a history buff because there are always so many wars waged and mankind never seems to learn. But her descriptions and the happenings at the court, the travels, the intrigues etc. It also shows how calculated and at times ruthlessly royal weddings are are arranged just for political reasons.
