Michael and Maxine, Max , head out in a "borrowed" canoe to check out Black Water Creek and to search for alligators, an alligator tooth would be cool , and abandoned silver mines, an old miner's helmet would be even cooler.

They run into a lot more adventure than they bargained for, and An Accomplished Tale With an Engaging Hero and Heroine This is a twisty and suspenseful middle grade adventure tale, but its primary appeal lies in the engaging and authentic voice of its narrator, Michael. They run into a lot more adventure than they bargained for, and their tale is full of twists, turns, surprises, danger and maybe a lesson or two.

But as I say, the real star is Michael's matter of fact narration. The book has a vibe very similar to Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher lost in the caves. Michael can be brave, scared, exasperated, frustrated and in turns hopeful and full of despair. Max is a solid heroine who is resourceful and tough and Michael's narration offers her due respect and admiration, even if there is an occasional good natured gripe if she gets too "girly" to suit his tweenage sensibility.

Some of Michael's rueful observations and understated descriptions of the action are truly accomplished, and should resonate with young readers. The book is very well written.

The author also does a good job with light humor, which I've found to be a rare commodity in adventure books aimed at middle grade readers. So, all in all this ended up being a very nice find and it seems that this would be an entertaining and rewarding read for any boy or girl with a taste for outdoor adventure flavored with some odd characters and a hint of mystery. Nov 26, Jemima Pett rated it really liked it Shelves: A really enjoyable adventure of a lifetime for a 12 year old and his friend one summer. They want to explore Black Water Creek, and the only way to get a canoe to take across the lake is to resort to subterfuge. Kids will learn lots of useful tips about the wilderness from this book. Not least that you should never go exploring with a battery-powered flashlight — wind-up torches prove superior once again!

    See a Problem?

I Had to read it in the car because we had to go out and I read it every second I could. One person found this helpful. I would highly recommend this book to children and adults alike. It is the kind of adventure book you still remember from reading when you were a child even as an adult. I'd sure like the author to do a prequel and sequels. A decently written adventure story for pre and early teens. The story was fun, with currents of seriousness running through it. Overall, it was enjoyable, but not very memorable. Five star reating secrets of black water creek is soooooo amazing!

Everyone should read it you would love it. Very disappointed that this book is rated for children but has a curse word in it. My 8 year old is an excellent reader and found this book interesting up to that point.

She asked me about it and I deleted the book immediately. It's sad that a child's book has curse words in it. Absolute fantastic read, with plenty of unexpected twists and turns throughout, this is an adventure story well worth a read.
